Historic Significance
This magnificent circa 1850’s home was purchased in 1859 by Jesse Root and Hanna Simpson Grant, the parents of Ulysses S. Grant the 18th President of the United States. Jesse Grant was appointed postmaster of Covington by President Andrew Johnson in 1866 and re-appointed by his son when Ulysses S. Grant became president. He served in that capacity until retirement in 1872. Ulysses S. Grant’s family stayed with his parents at the Grant House for much of the Civil War in which U. S. Grant served as a General. U.S. Grant’s sister Mary was married in the home. Besides Grant himself, other notable visitors have included Generals William Sherman, George Armstrong Custer and Senator Benjamin F. Wade.

The Property
This three story home was built in 1850 and features approximately 20 rooms with a fireplace in most large rooms. Most of the hardware is either authentic or authentic reproduction. The property is currently “mixed use” with 2 apartments each on the second and third floors. The first floor is currently being used as offices. The property is of solid brick construction with a full basement and slate roof. The home was substantially refurbished and updated in 1970 and a new roof was put on in 2005.

The home contains approximately 6500 sq. ft of living space on the three floors and is located in the Historic Preservation Zone with current zoning as R-3A-HP. The lot is 60.5’ x 115.5’ and the annual taxes are $4866.00. The property is denoted on the Kenton County PVA site as 054-23-18-019.00.

Location
This historic home is located just five and one half blocks south of the Ohio River in the Licking-Riverside National Historic district and is convenient to Downtown Cincinnati, restaurants and services.
